Welcome to Mark's Guide to Green County

Green County Wisconsin has a lot to offer for both the tourist and for anyone who calls Wisconsin Home. A disclaimer first. I was born in the Monroe hospital, spent my first 10 years on a farm in Monticello and spent many a summer in Albany and Brodhead with relatives. I have always had a soft spot for Green County of all Wisconsin's 72 Counties. Therefore it is hard for me to find something in Green County not to like. The first thing many think about when Green County is talked about is Cheese, the second is Beer. Green County offers more than Cheese and Beer. Of course Green County offers more than just cheese and beer. There are great recreational areas, parks, museums, shops, dinning, events, festivals and more. You also cannot overlook the strong Swiss heritage in New Glarus and most of Green County.

Mark's Must Do List

My Image

If you only have time for one stop in Green County, stop at Baumgartner's Cheese Store and Tavern. It is Green County in one stop. It has changed very little since it first opened and it does not have to change. They hit the mark first off with great food and drink. They are famous for their Limburger cheese sandwich, but any of their sandwiches are great.

The New Glarus Brewing Company is not the only brewery in Green County, but the view from their outdoor beer garden is priceless. Not only can you taste their "Only In Wisconsin" beers, but take a self guided tour and visit their gift shop.

There are many cheese shops and factories to purchase cheese in Green County. Some cheese shops are large with many different cheeses from all over the world, others small with just their artisan cheeses. The Decatur Dairy in Brodhead is my go-to stop for cheese. Not only do they have their own award winning cheeses, but also over 100 different varieties of cheese. Their Cheese Curds are famous and worth the visit alone. So is their grilled cheese sandwiches!

Green County is home to award-winning cheesemakers that take top honors at national and international competitions. To saw the least, Green County is Cheese County too.

The National Historic Cheesemaking Center in Monroe is a great place to learn how cheese was made years ago. Many of the Green County cheese factories offer tours to learn how cheese is made today.

Green County cheesemakers produce over 100 varieties of Wisconsin cheese. Green County has the only cheese factory in the Country that produces Limburger cheese.
