Mark's Guide to Door County Wisconsin
Door County Sunrises and Sunsets
Door County with over 250 miles of shoreline, Lake Michigan and Green Bay have the elements for spectacular sunrises and sunsets. There are many locations in Door County to view either a sunset or sunrise. Any Eastern location overlooking Lake Michigan will offer the opportunity for a great sunrise. And of course, just about any Western location overlooking Green Bay will give you a great opportunity for a great sunset.
I prefer a sunrise or sunset with a water horizon. Door County offers several locations for either. Viewing sunrises from Cave Point County Park offer not only a great water horizon, but the glow of early morning sun off the rock is spectacular. Baileys Harbor Marina and Jacksonport are two other locations that offer a great view of the Door County sunrise.
Sunset viewing locations are equally numerous in Door County. Sister Bay Marina offers a great locations to view a sunset over water. Get there early if you want to snag one of the benches facing the water. Ellison Bluff Park just south of the village of Ellison Bay is another great location to view a Door County sunset. There is a little walk to get to the best spots, so plan accordingly.
Do not let the weather or season deter you from getting out to view either a Door County sunrise or sunset. In summer you do have to get up earlier than winter to catch the sunrise, but winter offers not only a later start, but the early morning sun reflecting off snow and ice can be just as spectacular as a summer sunrise. The same holds true for a winter sunset over a bay covered in ice, it can be very spectacular.
